Today is a great day for general aviation.
Many of us have been fighting for third class medical reform for well over
5 years and today with the introduction of the 14 month FAA extension in
the House we are closer than ever to realizing our goal. This important
provision has been my top priority in Congress and to Transportation Chairman
Bill Shuster’s credit, he fought alongside myself, Senator Inhofe and
Congressman Rokita to include this provision in the extension which will
be signed by the President before the July 15th deadline. It
is truly a testament to the grassroots support for third class medical
reform from our community, the continual advocacy of the House General
Aviation Caucus which now boasts 284 members, and our GA industry leaders.

Aside from third class medical, this
extension will keep the FAA programs operating through September 2017 and
includes additional policy riders. For low altitude operators, such as
crop dusters and helicopter pilots, a bipartisan provision which I pushed
for to require the marking of meteorological towers below 200 feet was
included in the bill. Also, there is an important policy change to how
FAA hires air traffic controllers to help address the staffing crisis and
ensure qualified candidates from the military and CTI schools are given
fair consideration.

I look forward to celebrating this monumental
achievement with all of you who will be at Oshkosh in a few short weeks.
Despite these important victories, there is still more work to be done.
You can count on me to continue to fight for policies that have not been
included in this legislation as we debate a long term reauthorization of
the FAA programs over the next year.
